Below is my tutorial for a rice heating bag and removable cover.

Just warm it in the microwave to help relax those aching shoulder muscles.

My Old Pal

I can't believe how good I feel right now! I was getting ready for work this morning and I just HAD to organize something. Most of you know my ability to keep things organized is nonexistent. But I'm desperate to reduce the amount of stuff I've accumulated over the years. You know, stuff I might need one day? Stuff I haven't needed in ten years?

So, this morning I decided to put five things back where they belong and throw away/recycle/donate five things I don't need/will never actually use. It only took a few minutes and I feel fantastic! I'm going to do this every morning before work so I can start every day feeling great. And slowly my stuff will go away and I bet I won't even miss it.

On a completely different topic, my parents were over last weekend and my dad brought his old tackle box:

If this were my tackle box, I'd fill it to the brim with embroidery floss. Then I'd sit in the boat on a sunny day and embroider fishies instead of catch them. I'm putting this on my summer to-do list right now! There's nothing wrong with being prepared.

More crochet

I feel like I've done nothing but this lately:

I'm getting pretty tired of sitting on the couch. It's a good thing the Olympics will be over soon...although I'm going to miss them.

One good thing about couch sitting is that it gives me an excuse to work on my ripple blanket:

It's only 26" and I'm running out of yarn...but the plan was to make a lap blanket and that's definitely what it'll be. Of course, I'm going to have to start a new one next year because the ripple stitch is really, really fun. It's easy enough to do while watching tv and it's different enough to keep it interesting. We'll see if I can decide on another color scheme.

Anyway, that's all I really had to say. Back to crocheting and sitting on the couch.

Olympics, 1960 and Today

squaw valley 2009

I've really been enjoying the Olympics this year. It brings back memories of my own days as an Olympic athlete.

The year was 1960, the place: Squaw Valley, California. My fellow American figure skaters were in top form...ecstatic to be skating on home soil.

We practiced day and night in the Olympic Ice Pavilion...

Those were the happiest days of my life.

squaw valley 2009

The thrill of competition, the agony of defeat. Pushing myself to the limit and never looking back.

And while I didn't win the gold, I took home something even better. The real prize was the experience, the friends and the moments I'd never forget.

So, here's to you, 2010 Olympic athletes: may all your Axels be triples. I know mine were...

Tea Towel Apron

This week's Modify Tradition project is one of my favorites...a double sided apron:

These aprons are so fast and easy because the base is a pre-hemmed tea towel.

Live from the studio

My parents are coming into town today so before they get there, I'm sneaking in some time in the studio. I'm sewing and watching Gilmore Girls. It's such a perfectly pleasant moment in time that I just had to share it with you.

If you were here in real life, we could drink coffee and sew and share our favorite Gilmore Girls stories. Like, remember the time they played racquetball? Or, what about the knitathon they held to raise money for the new bridge? I wish my town did things like that. A knitathon would be the perfect thing!...although I knit about an inch an hour so I wouldn't be much help to the fund-raising efforts. But fun!

Anyway, I hope you're having a perfectly pleasant Saturday doing whatever it is that makes you happy.

Dreams of spring

I had a dream the other day and in my dream, I woke up and the snow was gone and the grass was green. But when I really woke up, things were still very, very white.

Soon, though...things will be green soon...

Yellow and Aqua

Four good things: 1)the sun is out! 2)my headache is gone! 3)I'm going to sew lots and lots tonight! 4)I'm no longer feeling down in the dumps (I mean, come on...who gets sad that they have a snow day...I'm such a whiner!)

yellow and aqua

So, here are some sunny fabrics just for thank you for reading and for commenting and for complimenting and for just being there, even if I don't know you're there.

Here's wishing you a sunny yellow and aqua day!

"Quilted" Canvas Tutorial

Do you ever make one block and then have no desire to make enough for an entire quilt? Because, you know, sometimes the block is really complicated or you're just not obsessed anymore? Do you have "orphan" blocks that you love but don't know what to do with?

Hopefully you do because this week's project will show you how to turn those blocks into art.

Potholder Tutorial

You probably already saw this tutorial over on the Modify Tradition blog...but I'd like to keep my tutorials on my real blog too so I'm re-posting them here. Pay no attention if you think potholders are boring. :)

Snow Day!

I'm pretty bummed. I should be enjoying my snow day but I can't shake the guilty feeling I have from calling in to work. I tried, really tried to get to work today but I just kept getting stuck at every intersection along the way. And since it's supposed to snow all day, getting home from work would have been impossible.

And I was at Ian's house last night and didn't make it very far from his house this morning, which means I'm not at MY house which means I'll be stuck inside all day without any sewing projects! And Ian took the train to school so he's not here either. What's the point of skipping work if you don't have anything fun to do on your day off?

Stupid snow! I suppose I should look on the bright side. I have a job where taking a vacation day usually isn't a big deal. I'm also nice and warm and have easy access to hot chocolate. And I'm almost finished with the book I've been reading for over a month. If I can just stop feeling guilty, it will be a pretty good day.

And because posts just aren't as much fun without pictures, here's a snowy serpent just for you:
