Cloth napkins

Check out these super magenta cloth napkins I made for Elaine:

They're made from quilting cotton, of course. They finish at 14.5" square.

These were really easy to make. Pin two layers of fabric right sides together, sew around the edge leaving an opening on one side (about 3"), turn, poke the corners into submission with a knitting needle, iron and topstitch around the edges.

And you're done! I'm making some with white on one side which I like for its simplicity but I also like the punch these double sided pink napkins have. They're twice as fun, you know?

Also, here are a few of my favorite cloth napkin tutorials:

Napkins with binding around the edges.

These are like mine but with running stitch embroidery.

This tutorial is for embroidered handkerchiefs but it would definitely work for napkins too.

  2. Those are goooorrrrrrgeous! I've been meaning to make cloth napkins for my family because I feel like we're single-handedly responsible for the destruction of the rain forests. Julian rips through napkins like crazy. I've made him a tiny kid set out of scrap IKEA fabric, but I like your idea so much better. I'm going to do this for our adult sized ones.

  3. Thanks Allison! I like the double layer napkins best because they're more absorbant. I'm working on a set of smaller every day napkins...about 7" square. The smaller size definitely needs two layers, I think.

  6. I love the fabrics you used! Are they from a particular line? I especially love the floral with the polka-dot background. In the first photo it's the napkin at roughly 11 o'clock. :)

  7. Thanks Staci! The floral with the polka-dot background is Petal Mod Blooms from the Andalucia collection by Patty Young.

    Going clockwise there's
-Matt's Tux from Flower Power by Jennifer Paganelli
-Tendril from Sugar Snap by Melissa Averinos
-Leaf Dot from Park Slope by Erin McMorris
-Swirly Buds from Bijoux by Heather Bailey
-Floral Swirl from Park Slope by Erin McMorris

I ordered them on etsy and took a chance that they'd all work together. And they did...whew!
