Kingfisher Quilt

Sometimes, there was a quilt so beautiful that I knew I had to make it, no matter how many times I'd epically failed at finishing a hexagon quilt before.  The Kingfisher quilt was that quilt for me.  Rachel at Stitched in Color started a Kingfisher Stitch-Along and I was SO IN!

This quilt was so interesting...diamonds, hexagon flowers...I really loved making this quilt and loved the challenge.  I also loved the colors of Rachel's quilt...her colors are always so eye catching!

If you've read my blog for a while, you know that I LOVE hexagons, and always say: this time, I'm going to make a hexagon quilt...and then I never finish it.  And that sort of happened with this quilt.  I had a bunch of hexagons that I'd made over the years.  They were larger than the ones in Rachel's pattern, so I did some math and sized up the background diamonds so I could use my hexagons.

Rachel's pattern calls for a hexagon flower in every diamond and I only had enough to fill some of the diamonds.  I didn't even try to make more hexagons because I loved how they look scattered around the quilt (and because I knew I would never finish the quilt if I had to make more hexagons and hexagon flowers).

Another reason why I love this quilt so much is the quilting.  I wanted to try something new and boy did I ever try something new.  I used plastic quilting templates to get these really pretty and precise shapes.

This entire quilt was a fun challenge and I feel so, so happy thinking about it and looking at these pictures.  I really can't believe that I made this one, and that it turned out so well.
